Ok let’s be real..feeling annoyed is just part of being human. People will do things that get under our skin (including our kids!), and our kids will feel that way about others too. But what matters most is HOW we respond to those feelings. HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN SAY: It’s okay to feel annoyed. Feelings aren’t bad, they just are. You don’t have to be rude. You can set a boundary AND be kind at the same time. You annoy me sometimes too! And I handle it by taking a breath, using my words, or stepping away, not by being unkind. When we model emotional regulation and show them what to do, instead of just telling them what NOT to do, we’re giving them real-life tools for handling frustration. Trigger Warning: Intrusive thoughts, OCD Impulsive thoughts: Sudden urges or ideas that pop into your head and might lead to spontaneous actions. They’re usually harmless or silly, like the urge to blurt something out, spend money recklessly, or jump in a puddle. These thoughts often come with little reflection and can be acted on quickly. Intrusive thoughts: Unwanted, distressing, and often repetitive thoughts that go against your values or desires. They can be violent, disturbing, or taboo, causing anxiety and guilt. OCD is a serious disorder that can be exhausting and debilitating. Most social norms are built around neurotypical expectations. For many neurodivergent people, these expectations can feel unnatural, exhausting, or even distressing. Yet, instead of questioning the rigid rules society has placed on social behavior, people are often pressured to conform. Children are taught that good behavior means sitting quietly, responding immediately, or forcing eye contact, even when it’s uncomfortable for them. But why? 🤔 Rather than pushing people to mask or suppress their natural ways of interacting, we should be making space for different communication styles. Not making eye contact doesn’t mean someone isn’t listening. Moving or stimming doesn’t mean someone isn’t paying attention. Silence doesn’t mean someone has nothing to say. It’s time we stop expecting everyone to fit into the same mold and start accepting that there’s no one right way to be social. Share your thoughts with us!
